We're Michael and Carolyn Emeny — 4th-generation farmers from Mudgee in the NSW Central Tablelands, and the founders of Mudgee Meat.

We've had working dogs on our property for decades. But once the kids had grown up and left home, the house got very quiet, and Carolyn had a lot of love to give. So we got Georgie, our Groodle.

Georgie is the reason this range exists. We wanted to feed her the very best we could, so we worked with an animal nutritionist to develop a range of human-grade pet food fit for Georgie — or for the king or queen of your house. Every mince in the range suits both dogs and cats.

That's how Paws n' Claws started: pet mince, bones and necks, made by butchers. Nearly one in eight of our customers has already added some to an order.

And last week we asked the rest of you about your pets. We got lots of replies, and all but one have a pet at home: nearly nine in ten have a dog, and more than a quarter have a cat. But more than four out of ten of you had no idea we sold pet food at all.

So we've added more, and we're telling everyone about it. Here's what's in the range, what's new, and how to feed it — answered the way we'd tell a mate over the farm gate.

What's new in Paws n' Claws

  • 3kg bulk packs of every pet mince, about 7% cheaper than buying three 1kg pouches.
  • The Pet Freezer Filler, a 12kg box of the whole range that clears our $160 minimum on its own. For the first time, you can order just for your pets.
  • Two sizes of every mince: 1kg and 500g. The 500g is sized for cats, but it's exactly the same mince, so pick whichever suits how you feed and your budget.
  • The Pet Mince Combo in both sizes: one of each recipe, in 1kg or 500g pouches.
  • Bones to suit your dog: ask for large or small bones when you order.
  • A feeding guide on every product, so you know how long each kilo lasts your dog or cat.
  • Every pet product can go on Meat on Repeat, so you never run out.

What you told us

You were generous with your comments, and a few things came up again and again.

"My dog can't have chicken." This was the most common thing you told us. Our Sensitive Pet Mince is just kangaroo and whole egg, so there's no chicken in it and no beef either. If you've got one dog that can't do chicken and another that can't do beef, as one of you does, it suits both.

"Mine is fussier than the kids." Plenty of you said the same. That's why every mince is sold on its own, in 1kg or 500g, and why the Pet Mince Combo gives you all three to try.

"A 1kg pack is too much at once." Every mince now comes in a 500g pouch too. It's the same mince, with less to thaw and less sitting in the fridge.

"I need bigger bones for a big dog" (or smaller ones for a little one). Done. Just add a note to your order asking for large or small bones, and we'll pick them to suit.

"Why not a straight beef or lamb mince?" We'd love to, but good beef and lamb is expensive, and our offcuts go into the sausages and mince we make for your dinner. So for now, we don't do a beef-only or lamb-only pet mince. If enough of you want one, we'll look at adding it to the range.

"I feed a bit of everything." Most of you already feed a mix of fresh and dry. That's exactly how we suggest using our minces: alongside a quality dry food, or as part of a varied raw diet.

Thanks for telling us.

Human-grade and preservative-free: what that actually means

Our pet mince comes from the same supply as the meat we sell for your dinner. It's human-grade, free from hormones, antibiotics and additives, and made by butchers, not a pet-food factory.

The big one is preservatives. Plenty of supermarket and pet-store mince is kept "fresh" with sulphite preservatives, listed as 220 or 223 on the label. Ours has none. Just real Australian meat, packed and frozen straight away so it doesn't need them.

A note on GST. In Australia, fresh meat for people is GST-free, but pet food isn't. So GST applies to the things we make specifically for pets, like our pet minces and Dog Bones. It's already included in every price you see, so there are no surprises at the checkout.

Our three pet minces

Mince What's in it Good for 1kg 500g 3kg bulk
Traditional 50% grass-fed beef offcuts, 45% chicken, 5% offal A wholesome everyday mince; softer and leaner for older dogs $13.70 $9.85 $38.45
Sensitive 80% kangaroo, 20% whole egg Sensitive tummies; no chicken and no beef $15.90 $10.95 $43.95
Surf & Turf 65% kangaroo, 15% wild-caught fish, 10% chicken necks, 10% whole egg Skin, coat and bones, especially older pets; no beef $18.10 $12.05 $50.55

All prices include GST.

1kg or 500g? It's the same mince either way. The 500g pouch is a handy size for cats, small dogs and fussy eaters, or if you'd rather thaw less at a time. The 1kg is better value per kilo for bigger dogs and multi-pet homes. Choose whatever fits how you feed and your budget.

Sensitive is the one our customers keep coming back for. Kangaroo is lean, and because most dogs haven't eaten much of it, it's a popular choice for pets that react to the usual beef and chicken. With only two ingredients, you know exactly what's going in the bowl.

Four ways to buy

Picking your own: any mince, any size. If you reckon one recipe suits your pet best, or you just want to see which one they'll actually eat, grab a single pouch of Traditional, Sensitive or Surf & Turf, in 1kg or 500g. Mix and match as many as you like. We know pets can be fussier than children.

Trying all three at once: the Pet Mince Combo. One pouch each of Traditional, Sensitive and Surf & Turf, in the size that suits your home:

  • 3 x 1kg, $41.20, $6.50 less than buying them separately. Great for dogs and multi-pet households.
  • 3 x 500g, $30.75, $2.10 less than buying them separately. Made with cats in mind, and just as good for small dogs or smaller households.

Rotating proteins through the week is a good habit anyway, and smaller pouches mean less to thaw at a time.

Feeding one mince regularly: the Bulk Pet Mince 3kg. Three 1kg pouches of the recipe you choose: Traditional $38.45, Sensitive $43.95 or Surf & Turf $50.55. That saves you $2.65 to $3.75 a pack over buying singles, and the pouches stay separate so you only thaw what you need.

Stocking the freezer, or ordering just for the pets: the Pet Freezer Filler, $176. 12kg in one box: 3kg each of Traditional, Sensitive and Surf & Turf, 2kg of Dog Bones and 1kg of Chicken Necks. It clears our $160 minimum order on its own, so you don't need to add a meat order to get it. Something for every dog and cat in the house, at about $14.67 a kilo.

Bones and necks

Dog Bones, $12.05/kg. Grass-fed beef and lamb bones, the same quality as everything else we sell. A real treat rather than a processed chew, and great for teeth, gums and keeping a bored dog busy. Got a big dog or a little one? Add a note to your order asking for large or small bones, and we'll pick them to suit.

RSPCA Approved Chicken Necks, $7.95/kg. Free from hormones, antibiotics and additives, with natural calcium and protein that's good for dogs' and cats' teeth and gums. They also make a cracking stock if you keep a few for yourself.

Something special

Marrow Bones, $14.95/kg. Long-bone sections of grass-fed beef, packed with rich marrow. This is the weekend treat, the one that keeps a dog happily occupied on the back step for the afternoon. Marrow is rich, so go easy the first time with a dog that isn't used to it. And if you fancy roasting a couple for yourself, nobody needs to know.

Soup Bones, $9.95/kg. Meaty bones, usually from the spine, in grass-fed beef or lamb, your choice. Most go into a stock pot, but fed raw they're a good meaty chew too. Limited to two per order.

The rules we follow with our own dogs:

  • Feed bones and necks raw. Never cooked, because cooked bones can splinter.
  • Always supervise.
  • Choose a bone bigger than your dog's mouth. Ask us for large or small bones when you order.

How much to feed

Every pet mince product page has the full guide. Here's how long 1kg of mince lasts:

Pet Raw only Half and half with dry food
5kg dog 6 days 13 days
10kg dog 4 days 8 days
20kg dog 2 days 4 days
40kg dog 1 day 2–3 days
3kg cat 11 days 22 days
4kg cat 8 days 16 days
5kg cat 6 days 13 days

A guide only, for healthy adult pets. Active and working dogs need more, and anyone with a kelpie or a border collie knows exactly what we mean.

We'll be straight with you: our minces are real meat, but they aren't formulated as a complete and balanced diet on their own. Most of our customers feed them alongside a quality dry food or as part of a varied raw diet. If you're planning to feed raw only, have a chat with your vet about getting the balance right.

For cats

Every mince in the range works for cats. The 500g pouch is sized with cats in mind, and the 3 x 500g Pet Mince Combo is the easy way to start. If you've got a cat with a big appetite, or a cat and a dog, the 1kg is the same mince for less per kilo. Cats can be fussy, so trying all three recipes is the quickest way to find the one yours actually eats. Chicken Necks are a good chew for cats too, fed raw.

Cats have different nutritional needs to dogs, so if your cat is mostly raw-fed, talk to your vet about a balanced diet.

How it arrives

Every order goes to your door fresh and chilled, never frozen. Pet food is the exception, on purpose. Every pet mince is flash frozen the moment it's packed, which is how we keep it fresh without preservatives. It may thaw a little in transit and, because every pouch is fully sealed, it's fine to re-freeze when it arrives.

To serve, thaw a pouch in the fridge overnight and feed it raw. The resealable pouches keep what's left tidy in the fridge. If you want to know more about how our boxes stay cold on the road, see How Online Meat Delivery Works. And for freezer storage generally, our freezer guide has the details.

Put the pets on Meat on Repeat

Nearly three in four of you told us you'd consider a pet food subscription. The good news is it already exists. A dog eats every day, so pet food is the one thing in your freezer that always runs out. Add any Paws n' Claws product to Meat on Repeat and:

  • your price is locked in for 12 months
  • delivery is free on every order, which can save you up to $52 depending on where you live in Australia
  • you can skip, pause or cancel anytime.

Add a 3kg pack to your regular meat box, or set the Pet Freezer Filler to arrive monthly and never think about pet food again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mudgee Meat pet mince human-grade? Yes. It comes from the same supply as the meat we sell for people, and it's free from hormones, antibiotics, preservatives and additives.

Does your pet mince contain preservatives? No. There are no sulphite preservatives (220 or 223) in any of our pet minces. It's frozen when packed instead.

Do you have a chicken-free pet mince? Yes. Our Sensitive Pet Mince is just kangaroo and whole egg, so it has no chicken and no beef. Traditional and Surf & Turf both contain chicken.

Do you make a beef-only or lamb-only pet mince? Not at the moment. Good beef and lamb is expensive, and our offcuts go into the sausages and mince we make for people. If there's enough demand, we'll look at adding one to the range.

Can I choose the size of my dog bones? Yes. Add a note to your order asking for large or small bones, and we'll pick them to suit your dog.

Why does your pet food include GST when your meat doesn't? Because Australian tax law treats them differently. Fresh meat sold as food for people is GST-free, but pet food isn't. GST is already included in all our pet food prices, so the price you see is the price you pay.

Can I order pet food without a meat order? Yes. The Pet Freezer Filler is $176, which clears our $160 minimum order on its own.

Can I just buy one mince to try? Yes. Every mince is sold on its own, in 1kg or 500g, so you can pick the recipe you think suits your pet, or try a few and see which one they prefer.

What's the difference between the 1kg and 500g pouches? Only the size. It's the same mince in both. The 500g suits cats, small dogs and anyone who'd rather thaw less at once; the 1kg is better value per kilo. Choose whichever fits how you feed and your budget.

Which pet mince is best for a dog with a sensitive stomach? Our Sensitive Pet Mince has just two ingredients: kangaroo and whole egg. Kangaroo is a novel protein for most dogs, so it's a popular choice for food sensitivities. If your dog has a diagnosed allergy, check with your vet first.

Is your pet mince a complete diet? No. It's real, human-grade meat, but it isn't formulated as complete and balanced on its own. Feed it alongside a quality dry food or as part of a varied raw diet, and talk to your vet if you're feeding raw only.

Can cats eat your pet mince? Yes. Every mince in the range suits both cats and dogs, in either size. The 3 x 500g Pet Mince Combo has one pouch of each.

Is the pet food delivered frozen? Yes. Pet mince is flash frozen when packed. It may thaw in transit and is fine to re-freeze on arrival. Everything else in your order is delivered fresh and chilled, never frozen.

Are your dog bones safe? Fed the right way, yes. Always feed them raw, never cooked, supervise your dog, and choose a bone bigger than its mouth. The same goes for our Marrow Bones and Soup Bones.

Can I put pet food on Meat on Repeat? Yes. Every Paws n' Claws product can go on Meat on Repeat, with your price locked for 12 months and free delivery on every order.

Can I share my pet's story with Mudgee Meat? Yes, please. We're looking for pet owners to collab with. Have a look at Mudgee Meat Mates & Creators, then get in touch and we'll have a chat.
